Poolside Sound System Installation in Chelmsford
Summit Sound & Light was appointed to upgrade the main pool sound system at Riverside Leisure Centre in Chelmsford, providing a reliable and easy-to-operate audio solution for instructors, staff and pool users.
Working within a busy leisure environment, the system needed to provide clear and even sound coverage across the pool area while remaining straightforward for staff to use during day-to-day operation.
The Challenge
Pool environments present several challenges for professional audio systems. Large reflective surfaces can make speech difficult to understand, while high humidity and the general poolside environment mean equipment selection and positioning need careful consideration.
The new system also needed to accommodate the different ways the facility uses audio, including:
- Background and programme music
- Instructor-led sessions
- Wireless headset microphones
- Bluetooth audio from staff devices
- Simple local volume control
- Reliable everyday operation without complicated controls
Ease of use was particularly important. Staff needed to be able to connect a device, select the required input and adjust the level without needing any specialist audio knowledge.
Our Solution
Summit designed and installed a dedicated sound system around the operational requirements of the main pool.
A distributed loudspeaker system was installed to provide clear and consistent coverage throughout the space. Loudspeaker positioning was carefully considered to achieve strong coverage while minimising unnecessary reflections within the highly reverberant pool environment.
The system also incorporates wireless microphone functionality, allowing instructors to communicate clearly while remaining mobile around the poolside.
For music playback, dedicated Bluetooth input panels were installed, giving staff a quick and familiar way of connecting phones, tablets and other devices.
Local control was kept intentionally simple, allowing staff to manage the system without accessing the main equipment rack or dealing with a complicated mixer.
Installation
A key part of the project was ensuring that the installation caused as little disruption as possible to the client and their customers.
The works were carefully planned around the leisure centre’s operating hours and, in most cases, were completed overnight while the pool was empty.
This allowed Summit to carry out cabling, loudspeaker installation, testing and commissioning without affecting normal pool operations or customer access.
By working around the client’s schedule, the installation was completed with no disruption to customers, while still allowing the team to work safely and efficiently.
Once installed, the complete system was configured and tested to ensure suitable sound levels and intelligibility throughout the pool area.
Staff were also provided with straightforward operating guidance so that the system could be confidently used from day one.
